So every couple of years I get obsessed with isometric pixel art and want to make some. Until now though, I haven't had time. (This is a rediculously time-consuming artform. But you know that.)

So I'm doing it. After making a rediculously time-consuming number of basic forms for practice following PixelBlink's and others' tutorials, I've started on a room for the joint.

I'm not very far into it and some questions present themselves:

1. Pixel by pixel: I totally understand not using anything (filters, antialiasing, etc) where Photoshop decides where pixels go for you, but what about copy and paste? Is it considered acceptable if I say, make a wallpaper tile and then copy and paste it across the walls?

2. Style: I started in on the carpet by picking like 5 colors and randomly throwing them down to get a carpety texture -- but it looks like 5 color noise -- carpety but maybe not pixel-arty. I notice when I look through the Joint, that there are either tile floors or solid color floors.  Is everything supposed to look somewhat mechanical? Would (if copy and paste is considered acceptable) it be better to have a repeating tile of some sort?

Copy-pasting work you have already pixelled is a time saver and there's no issue using it. Just be sure it doesn't auto aa when you select the area to copy.
 
It's usually tile or a flat color because it's easier to get it to look realistic that way; there's no other reason not to use carpet. I suggest working on an individual square of carpet and copy-pasting it across the floor when it's perfect.

Welcome. Copy /pasteing is fine if you pixelled the original. As far as the 'look' is concerned. Some like the boxy look others like things more organic. None of that is important, tequinique, concept is. If you look around the Joint you'll see many styles and all work well. Pixelblink does very clean isometrics, others like Benito go with abstract comceptual things, deTch (?) makes overly cute detailed things. I experiment with ideas for mine and almost always choose a different pixelling style, or try, lol.
From what you have so far I would just say don't start with the datails of things like the rug. It may all end up covered as you fill your room. Get your concept/idea then make the units that go into the room in basic forms. Use those to arrange into a pleasing layout. Then color and detail things.
You are just asking questions here but if you'd like this thread can be turned into a WIP thread and you can get feedback as you work things out. Just say so and it will be moved to the 'Joint' section.

I know I'm probably making more work for myself in the long run -- but I've found with most things that if I don't do enough detail to get excited about a project I tend to get bored and not finish. :)  I've got everything on layers and the final layout is in my head so I'm not too worried about it. The 6 or 7 animated cats I need to add once the room is worked out? Those concern me.

Here's where I'm at now:



The last half I did on my laptop so I will probably need to adjust all the colors later.

Edit: Yep. Looking at it from my desktop now. The blues should be brighter and a little more toward cyan; the yellow tones should be more of a peachy sort of pine color.

Oh, that looks great already. What a soft and delicate look. Coloring the outside walls (frame) and deleting all the blacks is my biggest pet peeve on Joint rooms so yours is already on track for a good one. Sorry to have mentioned how to work, obviously you don't need much help in the technical areas.
From what you have so far I'll nitpick two things. The refrigerator is fine since some do have one door thinner than the other, but it may come accross as an error to some. The other is the height and placement of the dining table. It appears to be 2 pixels to low for the scale of things and is placed too much in the corner. Its too close to the wall, 1px up, 1px to the left should fix that.

I see what you mean. They're kind of the same problem-- the table was "almost" the height of the counter so it looked wrong, the sides of the fridge were "almost" the same, so they looked wrong, too.

I dropped the little guy and door from the template page in and everything looked too small so I've enlarged it all a bit, and have started on the sofa. The wallpaper and back leg of the table are making a mess of each other and I just noticed I need to fix that. (Edit: I just noticsed that the bottom front corner of the sofa is messed up, too.)

AdrianJensen, please. If you're going to bump a 5-month old thread, at least have something better to say than that. brianna posted the finished version of this in her gallery; you could've just posted that as a comment there.
