Ask Metaru...I`m certainly NOT paying for a PS3:)
Oh, give the tossed dwarf a pair of strap on wings, and it would be ok I suppose. And if you animate him as he is about to discover that dwarves are just  not meant to fly, wings or not, and I`ll give you a free pixel at least.

I'd try throwing in something like your 'mt.everest' pixelling style to kick it up a notch.
Idea is cool but this can easily be seen as copy/paste noise.
A unique style can compensate for that.
Don't really know just throwing doo-doo at the fan ; )

?Chris? when placing an image try to not make the link go through imageshack first. I don't know how that's done, btw.

Your pixelart there is still not pixelart. You have whats called oekaki. Zoom on wish04's pixel and notice how all the pixels are placed with precision and care. You have so much chaos pixelling going on if you didn't say comet I could just as well think squid in the deep sea. Before you say it, yes, yes, comets are the squids of celestial bodies but that's not my point. Go to google and get a comet photo and analyze it then translate it into pixels. Think 'clay' make a shape then carefully and precise 'shape and mold' it. You can do it : )

You're overly stingy with white. Embrace both sides of luminosity. It's not polygamy if you're not married. And if both of them know and don't mind it's not cheating either.

Hmmm... I do notice similarities, Jal. Maybe I should make my kite a different color. I'm hesitant, as this was based very loosley on an old painting I did on a clipboard once of a kite stuck in a tree. I dunno.

As for you, greenraven, do moon B. Don't dither black and white. Look at some of my black-and-white pieces if you need some guidance.

that's lazyness kid. you have 16 colors to use, from a variety over millions of colors, and you'll just use a default black/white? c'mon. you can continue on this cheap thing just to have a green ribbon, or do something to really amaze us, and of course and most importantly, to amaze yourself.

Sure I've got 16 colors to work with. But if I can make something decent with only 2, then I be able to do something even better with 16 later on.

Sounds like someone hasn't done any old skool artwork. You try a 2 color palette. It's not as easy as you think might it is. There's no AA safety net for starters.

Ha Ha M.E.taru,

You can demand, but I still don't have access to
all those wonderfull options. The only thing
I am allowed to do is to post and reply on the forum.
All that advanced stuff on pixeljoint is not allowed to M.E.

Besides, I΄m a bit too busy on work and private life
at the moment to do pixels. My hero still doesn΄t
walk right   .. ehh  back .. so that will get precedence
over any challenge. However I have an ΄object΄ that
flies so maybe in a year or two there could be
a late entry by M.E. on this subject

Interesting to see what you are going to do with the
perspective clouds!!!

@MashPotato: Nice flying cow!

@Greenraven: I vote for B. More white in the burner
as well as some more smoke in
                        that area.

@ooshmaster: Nice atmosphere. Bit noisy. And a
bit empty. The kite is kind of small
                        on the canvas.

Keep up the good work you all!

Best regards from

M.E.

2. Started shading
3. Changed some shapes etc. Still very unhappy with the back of the ship.
4. Changed the captains room with a fan.
5. Put more contrast in the pic

no ofense, but yours and mine are way too similar, But that's just a coincidense, I can't asume (and wouldn't) anything, for obvius reasons.

I would use a reference for that ship, like I did, so I wouldn't appear to be a rought carved fliying stump, wich means work more on the actual shape and detail of the ship's hull and insides. That fan looks like a round class window rather than something spining at high speed. and i would work more on that background, the actual gradient is kinda boring.

@ Metaru, yeah we both have flying ships :s But in my opinion that's where the similarity stops.

Then again, thanks for the tips. I'll work on it tomorrow and I'll keep those pointers in mind. Still I find it very difficult to detail stuff on such a small picture. Then again, every challenge makes a learning path.

Posted By: ooshmaster

Metaru, black-and-white is NOT a easy route. Try doing a two-color piece, and you will understand the difficulty involved. If you look at the submissions to the 1-bit challenge, you'll see very few effective pieces, and even fewer that don't resort to large canvas sizes and massive amounts of dithering. In addition, black and white is even harder than other two-color choices, as it has the greatest contrast of dark and light. Many of the pieces in that challenge used other colors becuase it was easier to use them effectively than black and white. Black and white has no in between shades, no anti-aliasing "safetey net", as Greenraven put it, so an eye for lighting is required. You should give it a try yourself before shooting it down.

I already did. Not once but twice times ten, so I'm speaking from experience. But this'not the place for our personal opinions, and by the way, I don't want to futher expand on this, since that's -as i said- just my personal point of view, and I prefer to keep focused on pixeling for a blue ribbon.

Making stars twinkle with only two colors looks slightly retarded.

My WIP so far. Superman in hollywood. Not much detail yet, so might be unclear, but thats what its gonna be (i hope this is within the rules of "depicting flight)?"

Edit:

More muscular, smoothened the linework....

Ya someone else did a red balloon in the sky but mine's animated.
Things to do: 1) Animated string waving 2) Smooth balloon animation  3)Add something tied to string.  Not sure what though...

I can already tell this is going to be a great learning experience for you. Your rocket is already greatly improved, the lighting is great and I can clearly see the window and seam in the middle. However, if you are planning on doing an animation, which isn't necessary, but could turn out well, then you have a lot to learn. When doing an animation, you must think everything out thoroughly and plan everything beforehand. For one thing, stars don't "twinkle" in the way that they are often portrayed to. Your piece shows not twinkling, but blinking, which never happens in the real stars. If you go out at night, you'll notice that most of the stars' light remains quite consistent. They do sometimes glimmer, and sort of twinkle, but usually not something quite as dramatic as seen in cartoons and what not. But that brings me to number two. Look at your drawing, and think about the fact that you are animating a moving spaceship. It looks like it broke out of the atmosphere, and is hurtling through space. Thing is, space isn't moving behind it! The spaceship pushes out flame, but the moon, stars and clouds don't move, so the spaceship looks "stuck" in place. This is one of the most important things you need to change. Now, to animate the stars, there are a couple ways to do it. Simply have the dots moving behind it, or, if you want the ship to look like it's going REAL fast, then comet like "streaks" should be used to show the stars moving in a fast motionblur. It's kind of hard to explain, but I got some examples to show you.

http://www.nasa.gov/centers/glenn/images/content/101898main_CD1998_76632_516x387.jpg
Non animated shows distortion of stars when ship is hurtling towards them at warp speed.

http://www.itsf.org/brochure/images/manchu-fusion.jpg
Another ship at warp speed. It was hard to find examples from a side view like yours, but you should get the picture.

If you go with "dot" stars, here's an animation that could help you out. http://bima.astro.umd.edu/nemo/amnh/movies/orion5.gif

That leaves the clouds and moon. It's tough to break it to you, but you are much better just leaving them out. You HAVE to leave the clouds out if you want the animation to loop, and the moon would probably just complicate things. You might be able to make it work, but first get the stars fixed and see where it goes from there. Other than that, the flame needs work, but we'll worry about that later. Good luck!

Tongue licking lips?

If you can animate maybe the stars could twinkle a little while
the monkey and banana hover up and down some.
Of course the action lines would have to go vertical and not worth the bother.

Have you tried a dark blue instead of black, that often works.

@Varock, looking great. I hope you have enough time to finish, your
progress seems so slow to me.

I'm at 15 colours atm, so still within the limit. I put his chin 1px forward, gave the face a few new details, AA'd some more and added BG

Gonna work on clouds next, and the border of the bg scene should make it more clear its not a real sky... Also needa edit font of the text...

Those clouds are too cartoony, no?
Like Bugs Bunny cartoony and not Superman cartoony.

It might be ok to add a little more cape showing over the shoulder some??? Seems like the reds are going to waste.

Made the clouds a bit more fitting to the style (at least, i hope. Cause you were right about that jal ). Also made red part of the cape a bit larger...

Edit: http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/25300.htm - Submitted

Added wood-like pattern-thing-ish something between the black and the air, and some minor things before submitting. Anyone with suggestions is welcome, cause I may put the edit of it onto my gallery instead...

(First post, yes indeed. Hum.)

WIP - 9 colors (probably going to stay at that).

(Obviously the gray box around it isn't going to be there when it's done)

I can see a few things right now that I'm changing - I'm adding a person to the scene, but it's small and so is complicated and blah and... stuff. Also two of the birds are bugging me and must be fixed...

Anything else I may have missed that should be changed, let me know? XD
