Closed, since it's the border. Nice idea, I like it.

/note - Blacksmiths would have little in the way of wooden furniture in the vacinity, considering they work very close with fire/ sparks.

Thanks. I was thinking about metal tables (or stone) but then you couldn't see the tools...

Noone has ever made an open top so I say go with that.
You will need contrast on this. I think intensifing the fire will do that.

Looks nice so far, and lots of detail .  I think this could do with some stronger shadows in order to break up the texture and to define the shapes a bit better.  The table in the middle of the room looks a tad small (or conversely, the one in the corner may be a tad big).

Looking again, I agree the legs are atleast 1-2 pixels to long and the table is maybe 2-4 to wide.
