CHALLENGE: Game Boy Turns 20

Last week was the 20th anniversary of the release of the Game Boy in Japan. To celebrate we want you to create your own original Classic Game Boy game. This means an original game that did not exist.

Your challenge entry must include the title screen and at least one in-game screen. You may include extra in-game screens if you want.

Canvas Size - 160 (width) x 144 (height) per screen. Make sure you submit all of your screens together on the same canvas. Minimum 2 screens.
Colours - Use only colours from the provided palette (you may also use transparency between screens):

Transparenecy - Optional. Only use transparency between your screens, as stated above.
Animation - No.

 NO DEMAKES

Nintendo's Original Gameboy used 4 levels of grey only. This challenge is a celebration of the Gameboy. The palette is 'look and feel', some screens are yellower, others realm into ochers and browns. Just work with this green, k.

CHALLENGE RULES

  • Participants have until this upcoming Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) to /pixels/submit_icons.asp - submit their entry (strict). Don't forget to check the 'Submit to weekly challenge' checkbox.
  • Only new pixels allowed.
  • Open to all members.
  • Posting WIPs in this thread or in new threads in the /forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=8 - WIP section is highly encouraged, but ONLY SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ART.

CHALLENGE JUDGING

  • Every Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) the previous week's entries are judged.
  • Every week a new voting poll will be posted for previous week's entries.
  • Winner announced the following week.

CHALLENGE PRIZES/GOODIES

  • Top three finishers will receive an award displayed in your PJ gallery profile for all to see and envy.
  • Top finisher gets to call the following week's challenge...sweet.
  • 'Participation' ribbons will be given for all who enter.
  • No matter what happens you get challenged :)

Aww, we cannot use the green/yellow hued version of the palette? D:

I can do a lot of things, I just never bother to do most of them.

That palette looks quite green, to be honest.

there'sactually 2 versions of the gameboy palette. there's the one were using and there's a real green version. which is the one his referring two. but this is the better one out of the two in my opinion.

AFAIK the original gameboy changed between brown and green depending on the light you were in, but was never gray.  The gray was an improvement of the gameboy pocket so much as I remember, and I actually was annoyed by it and stuck to my big gray-outside green-screened monster until the GBC came out...

Not that it's worth arguing over.  I'm sure there are a lot of different screen colors with different manufacturing dates and individual histories of each machine, and let's not forget the contrast dial making the shade values (which I think are more important than the hues since this is monochrome...) almost arbitrary...

I'm a little confused- probably cause i think too much.

Does the game have to resemble an old game like the real GB games-

or can it be impossible like a 3d looking one - hypothetically speaking.
?

Sweet. This one is a nice challenge indeed. I ll try my best.

It says minimum of 2 screens. Does one of them have to be a title screen?

So shouldn't the canvas size then be a minimum of either 320 x 144 or 160 x 288?

Well, let's say you want to have 1 pixel transparent between screens then the canvas sixe will be slightly bigger. What if you wish to have a 2px border between screens?...therefore, each screen has a fixed size but your canvas can vary.

El Sato that piece looks like you just recolored sprites already in your game, and made a little piece out of it. not original in the slightest sense of the word.

Posted By: El Sato
Date Posted: 27 April 2009 at 6:22pm
nah not really, i remade everything, if you compare for example the backgrounds looks totally diferent :/ (not even resized)

here΄s the canvas where im working in if you want to check :3

http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/3115/gbpalette1.png

of course its going to look like my game recoloured... becouse its a GB version of my game! o_o pretty obvious xD

Posted By: x-death
Date Posted: 27 April 2009 at 6:37pm
ohh ok.with your skill it would have been awesome to see a more original idea. but something that annoys me about that piece and the one you posted before is your character would look better if he was behind the tileset he lands on.

Posted By: El Sato
Date Posted: 27 April 2009 at 6:47pm
oh well, its true, its like when im in the mood for doing something i can only think in that something xD
about what you said, in the actual game i made some bushes and grass that are behind the character and some others that are in front of it

sorry for the offtopic xD first and last time :3

Right! As long as you use the palette and minimum screens then I think you can make anything. I'm doing the no-more-than 10 3-color sprites on a line rule just for fun. I might actually be breaking the rules though if text letters and boxes count as sprites...

Loving this challenge. Working with the gameboy palette is one of my favorite things to do. I had an idea for a game with this palette in mind, so I figured this challenge to be a good excuse to start making assets for it. It's supposed to be a Bangai-O sort of game. Just lots of missiles and explosions :P
WIP:

I did some things not possible with the hardware (like the smoke-trail from the missiles), but I guess that's alright?

Ergg - very nice!

Jalonzo - I like. But I can't make out what's going on with the image on the right - is it a mushroom with a face? Something about it just doesn't add up,,,

Not sure if I will get to finish this or not...

Looks like a hollow half-body.

Even seeing the reference - which in my eyes isn't very clear.
 - I think you need to get extra definition.

This edit might help?

I presumed it is a hollowed body and tried to make it more like that - made one of uprights more arm like and tried to give the boats some depth... Also I didn't edit it but the round highlight on the hat is too round and a bit eye catching.

Some really nice and promising entries in here !

Here's what I got so far, the fireplace isn't done yet, and the font is somewhat hard to read, I need to fix that later...
However, I actually try to stick as close to the hardware restrictions as I can, but i'll probably break them at some points.
Hopefully, i'll finish this in time, as I wanted to to at least 3 more screens and I still need to finish the title screen...

... I'm beginning to think i don't have a remote chance at winning this...

Anyway, got myself a title and ingame. Probably going to do one or two more ingame shots. Tried to stay as close as possible to gameboy restrictions.

And I did two versions of the title. I need suggestions on which to go with:

Any suggestions on stuff to improve would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: ... photobucket isn't agreeing with my images.

My supergeneric brawler game. Pretty sure I won't get the other screen done in time, but who knows. C&c is always appreciated. And god, do I miss my GBA-palette now? ;)

[EDIT] New version uploaded, slightly altered background to make it more coherent. I'll go over it all tomorrow when I get up, I'm too tired now to make sense of it all.

That basically just refers to the storyline of the game. The moon's in the background of the ingame screenshot. Not sure how you could make gameplay of that :p

Still, I could do another ingame level based on like... the actual moon, or something.

My first post here, last time I actively pixeled was at Pixelation.

Awesome impressions. I'm a programmer, so expect not too much:

Edit: Modified a tad, I'm still not happy with the letters in the title screen.

I made some improvements.
Texts in metallic style.
I left the ground in the same perspective of the house.
I hope you like it.

Adding Fish Palace and Bird Castle Screens
I was trying to fade from light screens to dark but maybe the 3rd is too boring ?

Screw you all, I quit. XD
I cant fight this stuff. :P

And monotov, the text is hard to read imo. Maybe not so much contrast or something.

And now the titlescreen...Any C+C?

@ jalonso
You already have almost won the challenge, why do you have to post more and more screens? Anyway, they're amazing!

I'm very torn about my idea. The painting is so detailed and so many interesting things are in it that its hard to show this in a screen. I can only seem to make a new screen to show the pieces I really like and deserve to be on there. C'mon I gatta have the bird guy in the chair as a Boss somewhere, he's begging for it.

At first I thought, 'Why has nobody ever thought of this before' and now I can see why it would actually be a tad unrealistic to use Bosch...I maybe should have gone with Plan B, a Dali RPG.

ps: so you are ready to die! OR are you ready to die?

I would play that game so hard, Jal.

One little itty bitty thing, though. The sideways stairs look a lil' off to me, I don't think the slope or perspective is right, or something.

Also, I don't really dig the light outlines of the sprites.

Posted By: jalonso
Date Posted: 30 April 2009 at 3:59pm
Dr.D, You are right about the stairs. I am making real tiles so what you see is one tile area. I changed to 2 tiles, thanks.

Like making real games, sometimes conditions force the matter. The game is 'Plagued' rats are very important to the storyline so they must be seen and readable. Notice if I take away the outline they blend in and look like rocks, if at all. I can't have just the rats outlined and nothing else, so conditions force outlines on everything.
Lightening the BGs so the rats read and need no outline does not read the feel of the ref image enough for me. Making the rats bigger looked bad to me.

WIP,i think the lettering in the title is a bit out of keeping:/
I'll change it eventualy.

Hmm, true, Jal.

To be honest, I didn't even notice the rats with the outline, but for your sake, I didn't look super hard or long either. Maybe you could try darkening them, and then as well, they may not need outlines. And, perhaps, if they're moving as well, they may not either, but I suppose that's not viable as it's not an actual game.

I understand the priority issues, it's difficult to contrast sprites from tiles with only 4 colors, and you pull everything off quite nicely, I was just mentioning the outlines aren't as pleasing as without them, in my opinion, of course.

Well, outlines or not, keep up the good work, I'd still want to play it just as hard.

@Fawful - I think that looks really cool how you made the shots and beams look flat, almost like they're part of the background. Did you make it like that on purpose?

@ fawful, the typestyle IS wrong. Try working with those squiggly things in the life bar as text????

@ Doctor, I'm gonna try to make a slightly bigger rat sprite. I may not go with it because, I see that helmeted thang sprite doesn't stand out much and its as big as things get. As I mentioned earlier, I should have gone with PlanB - Dali RPG  :/

@ Dr D, Is that good?I would have thought that was a bad thing myself :/

@Jal,You mean with the score?
I know the title in the main menu is in desperate need of change(not to mention the name sucks),not quite sure what you mean with the HUD though,i know the text is too small to even be able sprite some numbers and it doesn't stand out at all.

Fawful, I meant the style of the letters of the title does not match in 'look and feel'. The title 'airway' is fine, what I suggested was that you create the text in such a way that its decorated with those squigglys from the HUD which look nice and fit the art, kinda this idea

Letter style is not too important its the decoration so it matches the game screens which have a cool look to them.

I would also add more elements to the screens using the same look. See the screen and sprites have a minimalist clean look so using the HUD to contain the screen will add visual interest and contain the general openess you now have. Add ships destroyed bar, time left, extra weaponry then tie them up with the squigglys, kinda like this, but more of it...but not too much.

Perkele, you might have missed my comment above.
I think you have grammatical error in the text:
> so you are ready to die!
I think this is a question not a definitive; ...so, are you ready to die?

Sorry, I didn't notice your post. Well, it was actually meant to be an appraisal (right word?). Would the sentence then still be grammaticaly wrong?

Posted By: jalonso
Date Posted: 01 May 2009 at 8:59am
the way you show it:
so you are = a question
don't understand appraisal but if the zombeh is making a more definitve statement then...

so are you ready to die!
OR
so, are you ready to die?

"So you are" doesn't necessarily imply a question, it can also be there as an assurance. For example, "Get it done now ... so you are ready to die!" Might be a bit clumsy, but it would work.

You are right of course. I was making it as simple as possible since he is German.

You know Dracula's Son doesn't look at all like Kid Dracula.

Really though there are some pretty nice entries going on here. And some that look nice but also like they'd be hell to play on the screen.

Hey!  It's my first post! :P  This challenge was 100% the reason for me to stop lurking and start posting.  So hello to all.

About the challenge itself - awesome idea.  I had to do one, and after three crappy starts, I'm going with this.  Here's the WIP:

I'm thinking of calling it NINJAH! or NINJAA! ... Anyway, not finished, but any and all comments are welcome.  I'll probably add some more clouds and fix up the crappy bricks.  Suggestions? :P

PS - how many of you code games?  Some of these could be really fun.  Maybe I'll turn mine into a simple platformer for kicks.
