I made this sprite for a puzzle game mockup I'm working on. I didn't try to conserve colors since I want the shading to look smooth. I used the Muybridge photos as reference. The framerate might look better in Promotion rather than a browser or Microsoft Picture Viewer. 8 frames.

What kinds of puzzles was this guy going to solve? Looks great anyway.

suqwire: he is the best horse ever.

like an superman.

user
yellowbouncyball (Level 2 Corporal) @ 11/13/2010 13:43

sure that is how they are portrayed in the movies... but... have YOU ever actually seen a real centaur run? :P  haha I think it looks sweet.  Maybe with the arms he gets more momentum -  i think it looks cool

user
Vertigo-Zero (Level 9 Necrophiliac) @ 2/24/2010 05:32

Awesome, but as you can see in different fantasy movie like Narnia, centaurs keep their arms practically still, like a human riding a horse.

Mathias (Level 5 Rokkyu) @ 12/17/2009 22:45

Oh wow . . . didn't know about Muybridge's work. Great to know.

Love the sprite. Biggest gripe is the rubbery waist (area between hind and front legs) flexy movement. Don't ask me how to "improve" it, though.

user
ParkerBabyDiaperCompany (Level 4 Team Leader) @ 10/31/2009 12:59

The head movement ruins it for me. I don't see why so many people incorporate it into their run cycles. It is a cancer to a good run cycle.

user
TheChan (Level 1 Rookie) @ 10/18/2009 23:01

Why didn't you make it leaning forward?

user
orenshtiv (Level 7 Ichikyu) @ 10/17/2009 11:30

this one could've work for this weeklly challenge! xP

user
ATM (Level 1 Rookie) @ 10/9/2009 09:33

Woow!  This motion is so charm!  Especially, a tail is pretty wounderful! Umm...!

user
Shrub (Level 1 Rookie) @ 9/29/2009 05:12

Wonderful.

user

I'm not worried too much about realism here. The swinging arms convey a sense of urgency that's lost if I hold the upper body still.

user
ben2theedge (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 8/18/2009 07:05

The lower half is good but I don't think the motion of the human part of his body makes any sense at all, a quadrupedal run cycle has a completely different balance than a bipedal one, so there's no need for him to be swinging his arms or turning his head; having him just hold still and bounce with the gallop like a horse jockey would feel much more natural.

user
Sterner Regnix (Level 6 Serial Killer) @ 8/17/2009 04:30

I could watch this little centaur forever....fantastic animation.

user
Fool (Level 6 SWAT) @ 8/16/2009 08:29

Nice dude=))

His swinging arms motion makes him extremely cute in appearance. Remind me my childhood when I tried to run away from the evil chasing puppy.=)Thouhg his front arm in mid position interfair with a belly breaking the flow a bit. I would keep it longer in extreme state, but thats  not really critical just caught the eye. Awesomly done.=)

user
KGladiator (Level 1 Private) @ 8/15/2009 10:51

Love it. Helm is right about the head motion though. Still, great job! :D

user
Helm (Level 5 Detective) @ 8/15/2009 08:04

That's great, I love it, besides the fact that he can't see where he's gallopping towards due to the excessive head movement! Makes him look panicked

user

amazing animating skills :o I wish I could make something like this.

user
blendaz (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/15/2009 05:41

 perfection.

user
Tpoe (Level 4 Team Leader) @ 8/13/2009 05:23

I don't know about the arms swinging, makes it have "character?" I dunno, but I like it and dislike it at the same time. One thing I noticed is when the hooves are in the front, they look kinda like if her were running with loose socks on haha. and the human part of him seems to get fat when he's facing more towards us, and skinny when he turns, not that big of a deal though, hardly noticable.

user
sharprm (Level 4 Deputy) @ 8/13/2009 00:50

hmmm.... took a second look at this and I don't mind the swinging arms. Maybe it fits for a cute/funny puzzle game. Nice anim did you use 'stretch' technique for the front hooves to make it look faster?

user
Satsume (Level 10 Capo) @ 8/13/2009 00:13

Nice and smoth animation ^^

user
Dex (Level 11 CEO) @ 8/12/2009 23:53

great horse-like running animation but the body + arms just seems too jerky to me. Still great though, hope you get a job soon :o

user
Badassbill (Level 11 Psychopath) @ 8/12/2009 23:20

I love the way the mid section flexes.

user
Rock3go (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 8/12/2009 22:37

user
MrSmiley (Level 1 Thug) @ 8/12/2009 16:33

The front hooves are about 3 pixels too wide. Good job!

user
Nessiah (Level 4 Mercenary) @ 8/12/2009 16:29

I think it might be better if he doesn't swing his arms it looks like the thing is unbalanced for some reason, at least an imo

user
Alcala (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/12/2009 16:03

Awesome animation, great job.

user
TheInquisitor (Level 4 Shichikyu) @ 8/12/2009 15:46

Awesome. He's cute.

user
Jooble (Level 2 Peon) @ 8/12/2009 15:21

Agree with sharp - Never seen a err... "conventional" centaur swing their arms.

But saying that, who sticks to conventions? Great anim :)

user
Manupix (Level 11 Godfather) @ 8/12/2009 15:16

I usually don't care much for sprites, but I could watch this for a while... I can't believe it's so fluid!

One thing to bother me: the two arms get exactly in the same position at some point, this is confusing.

user
Dr D (Level 4 Shichikyu) @ 8/12/2009 15:02

This looks great, and it does looks mooth, just like you wanted it to be. Colors are tasty.

I don't think a centaur would swing it's arms while running either, I think because a lot of the force of the run is coming from far behind him, and not in his front, but I don't know, I think it adds character to the animation. Actually, if I had to imagine a scenario to describe this piece, I'd say something along the lines of human turned centaur and is still getting adjusted.

Good work!

user
Souly (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 8/12/2009 14:56

His front hoof is morphing into like a hand.

user
sharprm (Level 4 Deputy) @ 8/12/2009 14:46

ITs great but why does he swing his arms? Surely he should lift them up and down or something. Swinging the arms would be for running because legs are swinging forward (im guessing).
