I've been helping out an IT teacher who is creating a game called 'Lightbot'(obvs.) to teach coding. Looks like it'll be very cool. Ironically I am also currently volunteering as an IT tutor (A-level, GCSE, and IT for the unemployed); someone kick me next time I volunteer, because I need to eat too! Hopefully I can post a link to the finished website soon though, because it's worth checking out - this guy is doing a great job.

It's not perfect (as it is very big, and I had rather important essay deadlines) and I also got tired of reducing the colours. Apologies guys. I got some extremely helpful feedback (esp. with regard to spherical shapes) at the PJ forums though : ) More feedback is very welcome, as this piece was rather out of my comfort zone - but since I am entering the final half year of my Archaeology degree I doubt I am going to have time to fix anything : (

Looks great but it's not pixel art. :(

Sweet, love big pixels

On the pixel art vs photoshop comments everyone: I very much agree with regard to use of time, but this piece was done for specifically for a game with pixeled graphics, so the start screen was made to match that. I don't know about you guys but it does always bother me a little to see lovely pixeled games, but then not the commitment to use pixel-art fully throughout. I appreciate the concern, but that's my explanation.

maybe you could have done that with 8 colors

It looks like a legit pixel art piece to me. Some games with smaller resolutions might just as well have background/foreground layers this huge.

Questioning his choice of style will get nobody anywhere. Let alone this kind of style is not out of oridinary in pixel joint, it's infact really popular style, it's just that the canvas is especially large here, making it look just maybe bit too much like oekaki. However, it pretty much reveals it's pixel art self when you zoom it to 2X, does it not? I don't believe you could achieve this kind of pixelated outcome with vector tools.

I kind of agree with QuaziGNR. The purpose of pixel art is to create meaning with as few shapes/pixels as possible. It generally has a purpose that can't be filled with other means of art. You could make something like this that looks a hell of alot better in photoshop.

I don't get how stuff like this is 'pixel art'. surely it's big, and i appreciate the time it took to make something so huge, but uh, you could make the same in illustrator, or any vector program and it'd look the same/better. It's definitely not in the spirit of pixel art IMO, even if it was created through PA means, id go so far to say all panda-esc works fall into this.

If it's made to look hyper AA'd, with flat colour areas, it's pixel-art purpose is kind of lost. it becomes an inneffecient way to make a certain aesthetic.

It's like taking oil paint and painstainkingly creating an image that looks EXACTLY like a childs crayon and pencil drawing. or even just painting to make something look like it was drawn in pencil. WHY go through that. Maybe panda does it for the technical challenge, but here i just see an exercise in lost time.

Overall the work on the lines is good for its size and requires very little aa; where you have applied aa it looks fuzzy.

I think you could reduce the banding on the light thing. It feels unfinished, which is a shame!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to more large pieces from you.
